Louise Hankins Obituary

Louise Aswell Hankins VIRGINIA BEACH - Louise Aswell Hankins, 89, of Virginia Beach, went to be with the Lord and join her son and family in heaven early Friday morning, Sept. 10, 2010. She was born in the Cypress Chapel area of Nansemond County, the daughter of the late Susie Jones Aswell and Augustus Grimm Aswell. Louise retired from Gladstone Auction Company in Norfolk after many years of service. She was blessed to have enjoyed an exciting life that included travel to numerous countries all over the world. Louise loved God, her church, family and friends, all of whom completed her life. She possessed a charm, wit and spirit uniquely her own. Louise will always be missed, never forgotten and forever loved. Louise was predeceased by her son, Louie Herbert Hankins Jr.; and her brothers and sisters, Blanche, Mary, Daniel Vernon, Lilly Mae, Willie Thomas, Hattie, Margaret and Charlie. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter-in-law, Libby Hankins of Vienna, Va., who was always there for her with a helping hand; grandson, Louie H. Hankins III of Arlington, Va.; granddaughter, Elizabeth T. Wilson and husband Danny of Bluffton, S.C.; nephew, Robert Aswell and wife Sue of Reidsville, N.C.; and nieces, Barbara Muffie of Erie, Pa., Elizabeth Callis of Harrisville, N.C., and Rebecca Vaughan of Ahoskie, N.C.; along with many, loving church friends from Pembroke Manor United Church of Christ where she was a dedicated, active member for more than 30 years. All of whom will miss Louise's humor and courageous spirit. The Hankins family would like to extend a special thank you to those who cared for Louise during the last few years. Her longtime friend and attorney, Bruce Mills, and friends, Kim Pate and Judy Mabry, will be remembered for their love and care, patience and great service to Louise. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Carol and Joe and the entire staff at First Colonial Inn. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m. at Pembroke Manor United Church of Christ, 600 Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach. Interment will be at Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pembroke Manor United Church of Christ. Parr Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the family. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.

I met Louise through Marie Stallman, her friend of over 60 years. I am considerably younger than both of them in years, but I wonder if I'm not older than them in spirit. What strong, independent, outspoken women! I love them! Full of sass and class. I'll miss Louise; I kept up a correspondence with her and went to visit her a couple of years ago, and it was sad to get the call from Don and Marie that Louise had passed. Louise Hankins should have been my birth mother. I had the honor of being her pastor's wife for seven years while we served at Pembroke Manor. Once you got her wit and humor, you immediately fell in love with her. Louise was probably one of the most honest people I have ever met.
Sometimes way too honest!! Why can't the world be more like Louise. It would be a much better place. I will strive daily to be more witty, funny, and honest...just like Louise. I thank God for knowing her. I loved her on earth and I will love her in Heaven. My tears flow freely in joy and in sorrow.

I'm so sorry for the loss of Aunt Louise. She was also the last of my dad, Emmett's aunts and uncles. I will never forget her wit and graciousness.

I am so sad to hear of Aunt Louise passing. I have many great memories of spending time at her house on Christmas afternoon, and appreciating her humor, as I got older. She is the last of my dad's aunts and uncles, and will be missed.
