Like yours, our hearts are heavy from the thought of our dear friend, Mrs. Vernell Goodwyn, being absent from our midst whenever we gather at your home or hers in the future. Since meeting her when I taught Carolene at Manor High, I have found in her a genuinely caring mother. She shared her love generously with me and my family, as if she had known us all her life. Last time we were together was at Norfolk State University in the fall of 2009. She was present with her daughter and son-in-law to lend her support to my wife and me as we celebrated a very special event at the school. It was so typical of her. She was never stingy with her time, finances, or acts of kindness. Her children possess the same spirit. So does the great man she married, William L. I always felt even closer to him because my daddy's name is William L. too.
In all the years I taught in Portsmouth, no family has ever made me feel as welcome as the Goodwyns, even years after I had taught their child. Carolene Goodwyn-Harris and her mother lavished their affection upon my wife and children as well.
No words can express my deepest sorrow for your loss! I am only consoled by the thought that Vernell loved fully and left nothing undone in her work here on earth. We can go forward in confidence toward an even better and brighter future, because she loved us.
God's blessings forever upon your family. Thank you for making us part of you, and we'll be in your company again ASAP.
Lift up your heads, and be ye lifted up! The King of Glory will sustain and comfort you, even in this most difficult of times. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all!

Cherishing the memories of happier times!
