Mary Puryear Obituary

Mary M. Puryear CHESAPEAKE - Mary M. Puryear, known as "Mag" or "Miss Mary," 86, of the 600 block of Partridge Ave., passed away Sept. 30, 2010. She was born Aug. 2, 1924 to the late Junious and Lena Walker in Brunswick County, Virginia. She was educated in the Brunswick County public school system. Mary was a member of First Baptist Church Campostella, where she served as a missionary, deaconess, pastor's aide and for 16 years as president of God's Prayer Band. She was predeceased by her husband, Morgain; her grandson, Patrick; four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Armstrong; one son, Morgan L. Puryear Jr.; one sister, Carrie Stone of Elmont, Long Island, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Morgain R. Mavolyn, Pete, Eric, and Barry; seven great-grandchildren, Travis, Tiffany, Byron, Jordan, Jahleel, India and Doyin; and a host of nieces, nephews in Chesapeake, Norfolk, New York, North Carolina, Brunswick County, Texas, and Miami; and other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Campostella, with the Rev. Tyrone Jackson, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Tyrone Armstrong, eulogist. Interment will be in Brodnax, Va. The family will receive friends Tuesday 7 to 8 p.m., Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Ave. Chapel. Family and friends will assemble at 643 Partridge Ave., Chesapeake, one hour prior to the service for the procession to the church. Condolences may be offered at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.
