Dolores Martell Obituary

Dolores Theresa Martell VIRGINIA BEACH - The light of God surrounded Dolores Martell, 78, as she went to the Lord in the early hours Sunday morning, Oct. 3, 2010. Dolores' home was in the residency of Our Lady of Perpetual Help since last October. She was born May 23, 1932. A resident of Virginia Beach for 20 years, she moved here with her husband Henry after raising her family in Islip, N.Y. Married for 59 years, Dolores and Henry had a commitment to one another that transcended the tribulations of life - a love that was steadfast and enduring. An altruistic and compassionate woman, she was a friend to those who were in need. She was an advocate for the mentally ill, the homeless, and the lost, always looking for a way to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. A spiritual woman, she poured her love and life into the hearts of others. Dolores' family was her passion. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Henry of Virginia Beach; her three children: Richard, his wife Maryann, and their two children, Michael and Gregory of Bozeman, Mont., her son, Robert and his partner Tess, of Houston, and her daughter, Christine Dalton, her husband Philip and their three children, Meghan, Jamison and Christopher. Loving and praying for Dolores are many family members in New York; her sister, Maureen Herbert; brother, Richard Grahame; sister-in-law, Bernadette Grahame; and members of the Martell family, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. The family wishes to give praise and heartfelt gratitude to Dolores' loving caretaker and friend, Alice, and the wonderful, caring staff of our Lady of Perpetual Help who worked diligently and lovingly to ease her pain and give her comfort. The family is especially grateful to the staff of Heartland Hospice - angels on earth for all of their loving prayers and support. A memorial service is planned in New York at a later date. Family will receive friends at the Dalton home Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to the Southeast Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association or The American Cancer Association. Dear mother, wife, sister and friend, we will meet again, somewhere over the rainbow. Until then, may God hold you in the palm of his hand. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mem.com.

Your mother brought great joy and laughter to our family during one of the most difficult times in our lives, when we moved our mother Joyce Kennedy to "Our Lady". She would greet us with a bright smile and hug each day. Her beautiful rendition of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" gave me goose bumps and tears to my eyes. Her gentle strokes on my daughters hair saying how beautiful it was...What a lovely lady with so much compassion for others. She will truly be missed by all of us ~

Mr. Martell, Rich and Maryann, Bob and Tess, Chris and Phillip, and your sons and daughters,

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom (wife). I have known you almost my entire life, and Mrs. Martell all but adopted me when we were teenagers. She was so kind and compassionate - I was always accepted into your home (by your Mom) with open arms and her wonderful smile. You all remain in my prayers - let me know if I (we) can do anything for you.

As they said in "It's a Wonderful Life", there's a bell that jingled somewhere on this earth on October 3rd.

I never met Mrs. Martell, but I know of her and her great spirit through the life of her son Robert, and through him, of his immediate family. They were blessed to have her in their lives. Just as I am to know such wonderful people.
