Robert Nelson Obituary

Robert V. Nelson PORTSMOUTH - Robert Vincent Nelson, 51, was taken from us too soon on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010. A native of Portsmouth, Rob was a nuclear refueling planner for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, for 31 years; and an active member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Chesapeake where he was on the parish council as extraordinary minister for the Eucharist and a proclaimer. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Mary E. "Becky" Nelson; his parents, Earl and Helen Nelson; two sisters, Julie Leone and husband Bob and Kathy Noblin and husband Jeff; two brothers, Ken Nelson and wife Barbara and Bill Nelson and wife Stacy; and a host of other extended family and friends. Rob's big heart, gentle nature and generosity will be missed by his family and many friends. A funeral Mass will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, in St. Therese Catholic Church by Rev. James Gordon. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Therese Building Fund or the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312, or online at www.diabetes.org. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

I was crushed to hear of Mr. Nelson's untimely death. My prayers go out to the family. I didn't know Mr. Nelson well, only when he came to Bldg. 280 for his paint in the orange and blue cans! I remember Rob as a very kind and gentle man when I worked in the dry docks at the shipyard. I have vivid memories of him working on the lathe in the Dry Dock shop making drive nuts. He was always willing to explain things. The world would be a much better place if we had more people like him.
