Maurice Steingold Obituary

Maurice Steingold NORFOLK - After a full and complete life of 94 years, Maurice Steingold passed away Oct. 15, 2010 in his home in Florida, one week before his 61st wedding anniversary. Humble defined his life, beginning, as he was proud to tell anyone, in the Berkley section of Norfolk, the son of Joseph and Ida Laibstain Steingold. He graduated from Maury High School, Norfolk Division of William & Mary and University of Virginia Law School. His love was great for his devoted wife, Thelma Saunders; their four sons and daughters-in-law, Ira and Jean, Lawrence, Joe and Sam and Trish and their grandchildren, Mike, a senior at University of California at "the other Berkeley," Max and Rose. His life's passions, too numerous to count, encompassed professional, athletic and community activities. The youngest of five brothers, he cherished his time while practicing law with Sam and Israel and his frequent visits, at least weekly, with Dr. Ben and Dr. Meyer (Make) and all their families. Concurrently, his real estate development businesses that he enjoyed with his brothers and with his cousins, Simon and Junius Miller, went beyond his wildest imagination. His myriad of nieces and nephews knew that "Uncle Morris" loved being with them and was always there for them. Beginning in the late 1950s, he became an avid tennis player which continued for many decades and sparked his action to set up a scholarship at ODU and be a founder of Tidewater Tennis Center. He and Thelma enjoyed their times at music performances, museums and many other cultural events. Ask him about music and he would run to get his saxophone or sit at the piano and tell you about his days in the Maury High School and University of Virginia bands, plus his young professional career. The family wishes to thank the loving caregivers who provided such great support. A memorial service will be held at Ohef Sholom Temple today at 12:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of Trish and Sam, 107 S. Dogwood Road, Virginia Beach, today and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be made through www. hdoliver.com.

Ira, I will miss your Dad. Of all the people I dealt with while working at HUD/FHA multifamily housing, your Dad was always the gentleman no matter the issue. He was an example of honesty. He always had the best interests of his tenants in his heart. I'm so sorry he is gone. Your Dad was a good man and a friend.
