William Hanley Obituary

William L. Hanley VIRGINIA BEACH - Cmdr. William L. Hanley, 76, passed Oct. 15, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; sons, Rob of Virginia Beach and Craig of Hampton; and daughter, Marcia Thrasher and her husband Mac of Chesapeake. He is also survived by a sister, Betty Harrell of Mililani, Hawaii, and six grandchildren. Cmdr. Hanley joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 as a naval aviation cadet and received his Navy wings and officer commission in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1956. He received Bachelor of Science degrees in 1961 from San Jose State College and later from Old Dominion University. He served in various commands in California, Hawaii, Florida, Cuba, and Virginia, where he retired in Aug. 1980. His most memorable career experience was as a member of the Apollo 8 Space Capsule Recovery Team aboard USS Yorktown (CVS-10) in December 1968. There will be a private gathering of family and friends at the family's Lake Gaston home on a date to be decided. Any donations to Cmdr. Hanley's memory may be sent to the Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola, Fla., 1750 Radford Blvd., Suite B, NAS Pensacola, FL 32508. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family. Henry and I just got word of Bill's passing. You were both so good to come and visit John and send him postcards from your many travels. Our prayers go out to you and your family. Blessings, Gloria and Henry Knight

What a loss of a wonderful neighbor and friend. Our heart and prayers are with all of the family. We will miss looking across the cove at the Lake and the seeing Bill wondering around and working in the yard. He was very special -
