Helen Maloney Obituary

Helen M. Maloney PORTSMOUTH - Helen Mang Maloney, beloved wife, cherished mother, proud grandmother died Oct. 20, 2010 at home with her family. Born Dec. 18, 1921 and raised in Honesdale, Pa., she graduated from Misericordia College, completing an MA in English at Syracuse University. She continued her lifelong pursuit of knowledge and education after relocating to Tidewater earning her MA in education at Old Dominion University. Throughout her life and career as a committed educator, she touched, influenced and engaged countless people of all ages. None so much as her dedicated and loving husband, William J., a retired electrical engineer from the GE plant in Suffolk. Left also to cherish her memory are her children, William J. (Kathie) Maloney II, Patrice Maloney, Denise (John) Starkus and Mary (Mame) Maloney. Helen's continued extended blessings and joys included her grandchildren, Rachel and Erin Kouwe, Megan Snyder with great-grandchild, Anna Grace and Evans; James (Audra Pinkerton) Maloney and Chris (Dorothy LaRosa) Starkus and great-grandchild, Jordyn Starkus. Her numerous friends and peerless challengers will continue to carry her joy and her debates throughout many ages of time. Aside from her family and her church, Helen's greatest love was the second edition of "A Story of Faith, St. Paul's Catholic Church, Portsmouth, Virginia." Her hope would be that work toward publishing this edition would be completed. A memorial Mass to celebrate her remarkable life will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, in Old Towne, Portsmouth, with a reception to follow at Resurrection Catholic Church on Cedar Lane in Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Restoration Fund at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Portsmouth, VA 23704. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is assisting family with arrangements.
