Dorothy Benson Obituary

Dorothy Mae Benson NORFOLK - Dorothy Mae "Dot" Benson, 75, of the 3000 block of Montgomery St., passed away Oct. 22, 2010 in Norfolk. She was born Nov. 11, 1934 to the late Matthew and Bessie Bates in Norfolk. She was educated in the Norfolk public school system and a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1954. Dorothy retired after 40 years of service as a teacher assistant with the Norfolk public school system. She was predeceased by her brothers, Matthew, Daniel and Joseph; and her sisters, Magndia and Emma. She is survived by two daughters, Benita Benson Hercules (Adolphus) of Roswell, Ga., and Vanessa Hodges (Joseph) of Chesapeake; one son, Johnnie W. Benson Jr. (Felicia) of Chesapeake; one sister, Jean Willis of Willow Grove, Pa.; grandchildren, Tiffany Tyson, Joseph Hodges, Cyndi Hodges, Johnene Benson, Johnét Benson, Johnathan Benson and Johjuan Benson; great-grandchildren, Kelye, Autum, Corey, Malorie, Cyanna and Cameron; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby Street. The Rev. Jerome Lee Jr. will officiate. A wake will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.
