Virginia Mirman Obituary

Virginia Mirman NORFOLK - Virginia Mirman, 83, died Nov. 4, 2010. Born in Portsmouth, Dec. 19, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Rose Meyerson. She was preceded in death by her brother, Melvin Meyerson, and her husband of 52 years, Alan S. Mirman. They resided in Norfolk. Mrs. Mirman graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth in 1942 and attended The College of William and Mary for three years and received a degree in medical laboratory technology from the Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati in 1947. After working in a hospital laboratory as a young woman, she ran a satellite laboratory in Wards Corner for many years. In addition to her professional work, Mrs. Mirman was an active volunteer and leader in her community. She served for 13 years as area coordinator for the Reach to Recovery Program of the American Cancer Society and was herself a 34-year breast cancer survivor. She served as buyer and organizer of the Beth Sholom Home Gift Shop for 14 years. She was president of B'nai Brith Women and Hadassah and was a member of Temple Israel and its Sisterhood and the Hebrew Ladies Charity Society. Known to her family, friends, and all who met her as a beautiful, independent, bright and loving woman, she enjoyed playing cards with her dear friends and battling with tough crossword puzzles. She was a masterful baker and had a keen eye for aesthetics - a trend-setter in her dress and the decorating of her home. Mrs. Mirman is survived by two daughters, Susan Mirman of Norfolk and Jill Mirman of Boston and two grandchildren who were the lights of her life, Rachel and Sam. She is also survived by nieces, Fay Mirman and Ina Leiderman and her husband and son, Martin and Adam Leiderman; and by her nephews, Marc Mirman and Andrew Meyerson and wife, Paula, and Mark Meyerson and wife Marilyn. Services will be held at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments in Norfolk on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 12:30 p.m. officiated by Cantor Elihu Flax. The family will sit Shiva at the home of Marty and Ina Leiderman, 545 Holbrook Road, Virginia Beach, Sunday and Monday, Nov. 7 and 8. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Mirman's memory to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Attn.: Donor Services, P.O. Ginny was my Aunt, my Dad's sister, and a true Virginia Lady to me. She entertained at her home like no other, and always impressed. We are greatly saddened by her loss.

I will always remember Ginny's graciousness, dignity, beauty and warnth. Her well appointed home was always inviting as I remember many wonderful parties and delicious meals shared by our family.Ginny was the support and inspirtation for so many breast cancer suvivors, most special to my family was the encouragement and help she gave my Mom when she too had breast cancer. Whenever there was a question, a problem or just a dark day Ginny was there with a smile, the right answer and hope. She was the epitome of a Lady and she will be remembered with love by all who knew her.
Our thoughts and love are with you now, sorry we can't be there in person with hugs.
