Gordon Joyner Obituary

Gordon T. Joyner GRANDY - Gordon Terman Joyner, 88, died in Barco Monday, Nov. 29, 2010 after a brief battle with illness. Gordon was born Aug. 15, 1922 in Richmond and was the son of the late Henning Joyner and Nellie Story Joyner. Gordon was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nina Marshall Joyner; his sister, Helen Wooten; and his two brothers, Oliver Joyner and Gerald Joyner. Gordon was a lifelong resident of Norfolk. After high school, Gordon enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country bravely in World War II. Following his years of Navy service, Gordon went on to enlist in the United States Air Force, serving in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War era. He eventually retired from the Air Force concluding a distinguished 32-year career in the U.S. Armed Forces. Enjoying good health and vitality, Gordon spent several years working in the shipyards in Norfolk as a crane operator, and later was employed with Pinkerton Security Company for many years as a security officer. Following his retirement from Pinkerton, Gordon retired to Grandy to care for his sister, Helen. Gordon cherished his lifelong membership in the VFW Post 392 of Virginia Beach, spending time with family, and making numerous friends throughout the Grandy community. Surviving Gordon Joyner are his two sons, Kirk Joyner of South Carolina, and Robert Brown and wife Bunny of West Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews - including his nephew and devoted caregiver, Gordon "Donnie" Wooten of Jarvisburg, and a host of former colleagues, co-workers, and dear friends. In accordance with Gordon's wishes, there will be no services and inurnment will be private in West Virginia. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Gordon's honor, may do so in care of the Disabled American Vets. Condolences to the family may be expressed via the online registry at www.gallopfuneralservices. com. Gallop Funeral Services Inc. Nags Head, was entrusted with arrangements.
