Maxine Fontaine Obituary

Maxine C. Fontaine VIRGINIA BEACH - Maxine C. Fontaine, 85, was currently of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, joined her loving husband, Pete in heaven on Dec. 1, 2010. She passed peacefully in her daughter's home. Mrs. Fontaine was born Sept. 7, 1925 in El Dorado, Ark. She is survived by her son, Edward Fontaine and girlfriend, Betty Credle of Norfolk; daughter, Helen McClendon and husband Charles of Ohio; two grandchildren, Virginia Thrasher of Fairfax and Warren Thrasher of Chesapeake; brother, Larry L. Crain and wife Madelyn of Louisiana; and half-sister, Virginia Johnson of Texas. She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Fontaine and her husband, G.E. "Pete" Fontaine. Mrs. Fontaine graduated in 1943 from Strong High School in Arkansas. In 1945, she was recruited by the F.B.I. to work in Washington, D.C., under the identification division. She later enrolled in the U.S. Nurses Cadet Core, graduated, and then worked as a R.N. in the D.C. area until marrying her beloved husband Pete in 1950. She and Pete later moved to Norfolk and raised three children. Mrs. Fontaine's hobbies included tennis, bird watching, and traveling across the U.S. with her husband. Gardening was her passion, and she was especially proud of her beautiful azalea bushes. Later in life, she received great joy from her two grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. Mrs. Fontaine truly exemplified the love of Christ each day of her life, through her kind heart, gentle nature, compassion and love towards others, never saying an unkind word, and always putting other's needs before her own. A celebration of Mrs. Fontaine's life will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 11, at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or your favorite charity. Friends may offer condolences at diciccoandsonsfh.com.

We have the fondest memories of Pete and Maxine as neigbors and friends. It was such a pleasant experience to be in their company. They were each a joy to know. Some of the memories of Maxine were ............. her excitement when the U.S.Open for tennis was on TV .... her phone calls announcing that the great blue heron was at the backyard riverbank ......... her pride in her family ...... her continuous desire to help neighbors (she even, while walking, picked up trash and pulled weeds in their yards) ...... her constant pleasant demeanor.

For Helen, Ed and remaining family members. We'll miss the service on the 11th because we'll be on a trip. We really wish we could be there. We notified Brett Lee (formerly mowed their lawn) -- he had hoped to attend but will also be out of state on that day. Our condolences to you all.......Pat & Rex Pope, Virginia Beach

Helen, Ed, Virginia and Warren, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Maxine. Maxine was one of the kindest people I have ever known. She was a joy to be around. I miss going for walks with her. We would look at the birds and all the plants and flowers, I especially liked picking lambs ear and giving to her, She would smile big and say oh that is soft and tell me it was lambs ear. We would stop and the feed the turtles which she enjoyed very much and we would walk by the kitchen garden where we would smell the rosemary and other herbs that would be growing. I am thankful for the time that I had with Maxine and Pete. I learned alot from the both them, Maxine will be truly be missed.
