Michael Balk Obituary

David M. Balk VIRGINIA BEACH - Capt. David Michael Balk, 53, passed away Dec. 2, 2010 in Virginia Beach. Capt. Balk recently retired from the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) in Little Creek after serving 30 years in the United States Naval Civil Engineering Corp. (Seabees). He had qualified as a Seabee combat warfare and diving officer. He received a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, Calif., and a M.E. in Ocean Engineering from Texas A&M. His enthusiasm and passion for engineering, ocean sciences, and anything to do with the ocean was surpassed only by his love of family. Capt. Balk is survived by his wife of 30 years, Juanita Paula; his son, 1st Lt. Alexander Sean, his daughter, Meghan Anne; and his mother, Melvina Lee of Tucson, Ariz. Other survivors include his nieces, Jessica Sarah and Stephanie Debra Balk; and his cousin, Sarah Kaye Bellman. His father, Sheldon Balk, and his brother, Lt. Cmdr. Richard Dean Balk preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Chapel Wednesday, Dec. 8, from noon to 1 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Seabee Museum or the Mark V. Monument Project.
