Rose Zelinger Obituary

Rose B. Zelinger NORFOLK - Rose B. Zelinger, 88, formerly of the 6300 block of Granby St., passed away Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Rose and her late husband, Jules Zelinger, moved to Norfolk in 1947, where they were among the founders of Temple Israel. She was an active member of the synagogue for more than 55 years, serving as co-president of the sisterhood, a choir member, a Sunday school teacher, as well as holding numerous committee chairmanships. Rose's greatest joy was spending time with her family. Her legacy lives on through her four daughters and sons-in-law, Elise and Alex Berkowitz of Virginia Beach, Susan and Felix Amar of Long Branch, N.J., Robin and Howard Casway of Richmond, Va., and Tina and Robert Davis of Cummings, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Sheri Rosenberg, Jay Berkowitz, Jeffery Berkowitz, Mercedes Amar, Joni Amar, Rachelle Amar, Lauren Haber, Stephanie Casway and Julie Davis; six great-grandchildren, Noah Shapiro, Evan Rosenberg, Jake Bakley, Ethan Bakley, Leon Haber, and Felix Haber; and her dear friends and neighbors of 55 years, Bronia Drucker and family. The family wishes to thank Marie Lawrence, Frances Harris, Connie Berry, and Scarlett Parson for their loving care during the past three years of Rose's life. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Temple Israel, 7255 Granby St., Norfolk. Dr. Michael Panitz, rabbi of Temple Israel will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will receive friends at the home of Elise and Alex Berkowitz, 2336 Osprey Villa Court, Virginia Beach. Minyan services will be held at the Berkowitz home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Temple Israel, Temple Fund. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.altmeyer.com.
