Corinne Starke Obituary
Corinne Shipp Starke VIRGINIA BEACH - Corinne Shipp Starke, formerly of the 1300 block of Buckingham Ave. in Norfolk, passed away Dec. 25, 2010. She was living at Westminster-Canterbury in Virginia Beach which had been her home for close to 20 years. Born in Crewe, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Henry Shipp and Corinne Lewis Shipp and was the widow of Harold Daingerfield Starke of Norfolk. Corinne graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., in 1939 and studied music at Northwestern University. She taught at Liberty Academy in Bedford, Va., and also in Winchester, Va., for several years. She taught public school music for six years in Norfolk and served as church organist during these years and later was organist and choir director at Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk for 15 years. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk and was active in the Presbyterian Women's Group. She was the organist for the church at Westminster-Canterbury for 11 years. She was a caring and loving person, friend and mother. Mrs. Starke is survived by her two sons, Edward D. Starke III and his wife Molly and by Harold D. Starke Jr. and his wife Kimberly, both of Raleigh, N.C. She is survived by three grandchildren, Melanie Starke Safir and her husband Jesse of Carrboro, N.C., Bryan Edward Starke and Mary Shipp Starke, both of Raleigh; and three great- grandchildren, Lucy, Bella and Ophelia Safir of Carrboro. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Meade Memorial Episcopal Church, White Post, Va. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster- Canterbury Employee Christmas Fund.
