Frank Schlegel Obituary

Frank E. Schlegel Jr. NORFOLK - Frank East Schlegel Jr., 86, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010. He was retired after 25 years with Life Savings Bank as their senior vice president. Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Margaret Gentes Schlegel and Frank E. Schlegel Sr. Frank was a fourth generation member, a trustee, and deacon of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, now Trinity Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Norfolk Kiwanis Club, and The Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in the 273rd Ordinance Company, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was instrumental in liberating Birkenau. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Deland Alphin Schlegel; a devoted daughter, Madalyn S. Hopkins of Richmond; and a granddaughter, Margaret Elizabeth Hopkins Kandik and her husband, Matt of Charleston, S.C.; and a brother, Robert Schlegel of Norfolk. A memorial service is being planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Diamond Springs Christian Church, 5612 Haden Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be offered to the family through hdoliver.com.
