Stanley Tarkenton Obituary

Stanley Tarkenton Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Stanley M. Tarkenton Sr., 84, passed away Dec. 30, 2010 at Sentara Leigh Hospital. He was born in Norfolk May. 8, 1926 to the late Capt. Walter and Effie Tarkenton. He was predeceased by his brother, Walter Tarkenton Jr. Stanley, a World War II combat veteran, proudly served under General Patton's command and was the recipient of the Bronze Star and numerous other military recognitions. He used to say, "I had a pilot's license prior to a driver's license." Stan was a life member of 4th Infantry Division Association, and was the first recipient to be awarded the DMOR, Distinguish Member of the Regiment. He was also a lifetime member of the DAV Virginia Beach Chapter 20. He often spoke with pride of the military and felt a warm kinship to all soldiers. He was also commissioner of Babe Ruth Little League- Little Creek when his children were young. He loved to work with the kids and helped to keep the leagues running smoothly for all who enjoyed the game. "Stan" was a lover of nature and always cared for the little ones who came by to visit...the birds, squirrels and ducks. He enjoyed planting seeds and waiting for a tree or flower to flourish when possible. He could be seen daily walking around his yard waving at anyone who passed by his home. Stan was a graduate of William and Mary and Harvard Business and held many positions locally in banking and commercial mortgage corporations prior to his retirement. He is survived by Josephine Graeff, his companion of 30 years; daughter, Susan Tarkenton; son, Stanley Tarkenton Jr.; grandson, Stanley Tarkenton III; and niece, Janie Cimino. Also dear to him are Karen Pelham, Debi and Wil Fritter, Jimmy, Belinda, Ashley, and Jamie Graeff, Steve and Lynette Graeff, Steve Graeff Jr., Matthew Graeff, Laura Adams and Eddie Loyd, Mark Adams, Kelly Nieves and Haden Adams. Also, his beloved cats, Boots and Chexie. The family would like to give a special thanks to Bill Davis and many other friends who touched Stan's life by visiting and laughing with him, which he always enjoyed. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. in Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Susan and Stan,

I only have fond memories of your Dad. From the first time I met him in the 70's, he always had a smile and a joke to tell. He loved being around family and friends - the more the merrier to tell his stories about the war! We all learned alot from him. He was truly an American War Hero and I am so glad to have known him all these years.

Susan, you have your Fathers joking ways and he gave both of you morals to live your life by.

He will truly be missed, but you have great memories to carry you through.

Jo,I know you have lost your Partner, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Karen, I know you also lost a 'Dad", I am thinking about you.

Love you both,

Wayne and Doris Miller

To Susan and Family, I am sorry to hear of your lost. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. This is a quote that someone shared with me when I lost a loved one.It provided me with some comfort and I hope it does the same for you. "Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy"..

Sue and Stan, we did not know your Dad, only the stories we have heard from you. Through the photos you and Stan have so graciously shared, we feel we knew him. His demeanor and characterization in the photos remind us so much of you and Stan. We can see his humor and kindness in the photos that have been instilled in you and Stan. Bet and I are very sorry to hear about your Dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Karen, Stan, and family.

To the Tarkenton Family,
"Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord: and let perpetual light shine upon him."

Both Susan and I were deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Stan's passing. Please accept our deepest condolences and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. I consider myself so very blessed to have come to know Stan over the last five years. We did many things together and I so enjoyed his smile, his stories and his unique "Infantryman's" spirit. He was my DAV Comrade, my Teacher, my Friend and my Hero. He was the greatest of the greatest generation.

Stan's devotion to God, Country and Family is a legacy of an American Patriot and will endure and transcend generations to come. As a spiritual gift to the family, you will be remembered daily in the Liturgy of the Hours and honored each year with a celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
With love and God's blessing to you all,
