Richard Mastin Obituary

Rev. Richard E. Mastin
March 24, 2008
Following a valiant seven-month battle with cancer, the Reverend Richard Earl Mastin of Jordan, N.Y., went to be with his Lord on Monday evening, March 24, 2008, in Syracuse, just three months short of his 75th birthday. He was born in Binghamton, N.Y., on June 22, 1933, the oldest son of Harold and Mabel Stevens Mastin. He was a retired minister (August 2005) after 50 years of ministry at seven churches, in Camillus, Reading Center, Altay, Canandaigua, Port Byron, Macedon, and Barre Center, and owner of Rich's Construction. Most recently, Rich has been employed as a custodian in Jordan Community Building and Town Office Building. He has also been a substitute teacher at Jordan Elbridge School and Watkins Glen, Odessa, and Dundee Central Schools. Earlier in his career, Rich also was a church camp counselor and a water safety instructor. He graduated from Cornell University (1955) where he was a member of Kappa Delta Rho, Colgate Rochester Divinity School (1959), and did some graduate work at Drew University (1980's). Rich volunteered for and was a member of a number of organizations including: Jordan Masonic Lodge; Syracuse Court, Order of the Amaranth; Order of the Eastern Star; Camillus Fire Department as Chaplain; Scottish Rite where he was a 32nd Degree Master Mason; Valley Men's Club; Onondaga Hill Club; Tigris Shrine Temple; 2000 American Baptist Nicaraguan Mission trip; and American Baptist Men. He was especially proud of his work as a September 11 volunteer. Rich was an avid reader and gardener, and had a passion for playing cards and singing. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, and stepdaughter, Ann (Rutledge) Dodge. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Jane G. (Welty) Mastin; stepmother, Frances Mastin, Binghamton; four daughters, Bethany (James) Feuerstein, Geneseo, Deborah (Fred) Johnson, Virginia, Lynette (Peter) Reeb, Henrietta, and Michelle (Earl) Harris, Virginia; stepchildren, Brian (Linda) Rutledge of Maryland; Donna (Jeffery) Keegan, Corning, George (Pamela) Rutledge, Reading Center, N.Y.; sister, Marold (Curtis) Mastin Murray, Binghamton; brothers, Ray (Penny) Mastin, Binghamton, Chalmer (Alice) Mastin, Michigan, and Everel Mastin, New Jersey; 18 grandchildren and step grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday, March 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. at B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, 10 Genesee Street, Camillus, N.Y. 13031. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, at Meridian Baptist Church, Route 370, Meridian, N.Y. Rich asked that his body be donated to science/medical research. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to Shriner's Hospital, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, Mass. 01104. Please sign his guestbook at www.BLBUSH.com.
