Arretta Rieder Obituary

Arretta "Shirley" Rieder
of Binghamton
In the arms of Angels, Arretta "Shirley" Rieder, 81, was carried home to Heaven on August 10, 2008 to be reunited with her husband, Floyd. She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd; and infant son; parents, Gladys Chubb and Elmer Dix; siblings, Elwood Dix, Marion Howell, Barbara Osborne, and Richard Dix. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Jim Moffitt, Vernon Center, N.Y., Kathy Guinan and Jim Cucci, Binghamton, N.Y.; and grandsons, Matthew and Timothy Karhnak, Vernon Center, N.Y.; and grandpets, especially Holly, Dora and Bandit. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Sally and Linda Dix; and brother-in-law, William Osborne Sr.; as well as many special nieces, nephews and cousins. Shirley also thought fondly of her many special neighbors and friends. Shirley's interests were many. She enjoyed bowling as well as watching and counting hot air balloons when launched at local and out of town festivals. She also enjoyed watching humming-birds as they fed in her yard and her many crafts, especially making needlepoint crosses. During the last several years Shirley enjoyed scrapbooking and overnight crops with her Creative Memories family. You may have known Shirley as "the Muffin Lady", always sharing her delicious Banana Muffins! Shirley was a member of O.E.S. and a 1975 Past Matron of Garnet Chapter, Carbondale, Pa. She was affiliated with many other chapters and most recently Laurel Chapter #67, Waymart, Pa., and Tioughnioga Chapter #531, Whitney Point, N.Y. She wore many hats through her years of working. One of her favorites was fund raising, whether it was for Cystic Fibrosis, Children's Miracle Network, Alzheimer's, Diabetes or some other worthy cause; if you were in her view, she was asking you to donate. If you used to visit Eckerd on Front St., then you probably knew Arretta's smiling face.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to one of your favorite charities. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 14, 2008, at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango St., Binghamton, N.Y., with Rev. Douglas Hill, Pastor of Union Center Christian Church, Boswell Hill Rd., Endicott, N.Y. Burial will be in the Vestal Hills Cemetery. Friends may call the the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. An Eastern Star Service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday evening by the Order of Eastern Star Tioughnioga Chapter #531, Whitney Point, N.Y.

My brother, Warren, married Shirley's sister Marion , and as I was the same age as Shirley, I got to visit with her quite often. It saddens me to learn she has died. I send my sympathy to her daughters and grandchildren. God bless all of you and help you thru your grief.

Sharon, Kathy, family and friends.

You are in our thoughts and prayers. This poem was sent to me when my best friend passed away about 8 years ago. I loved it so much that I kept it. Now I like to share it with you.
My God bless you , your family and friens always. You have a special Guardian Angel watching over you.

"I Have a Place in Heaven"

Please don't sing sad songs for me,
Forget your grief and fears,
For I am in a perfect place,
Away from pain and tears...
I'm far away from hunger
And hurt and want and pride.
I have a place in Heaven
With the Master at my side.
My life on earth was very good,
As earthly lives can go,
But Paradise is so much more
Than anyone can know...
My heart is filled with happiness
And sweet rejoicing, too
To walk with God is perfect peace,
A joy forever new.

Love to all Anita and Gene

Shirley was such a joy to be around. She was always trying to do something to help you out and keep busy. She blessed me with one of the many crosses she made and shared. The Creative Memories crops will never be the same without her. My prayers and sympathy to her family and friends.

To the family of Shirley Rieder,
I met Shirley at Eckerd. She always made me smile. We would often talk about our health but we always end with a laugh about these golden years. She was one special lady. I know you will miss her as will so many who met her along the way. I know your memories will help you to get by today and in the days to come. I just wanted you to know I share in your sorrow. My prayers are with all of you.

My mother Marilyn befriended Arretta when she worked for American Greetings at Eckerd's on Front Street. I remember the genuine kindness that Arreta showed to my mother during her fight with cancer. Her appetitie was slim to nothing at times, however upon Arretta's arrival with freshly baked muffins, hungry or not, her visit always brought a smile to my Mom's face. Long after my mother's death, she was kind-hearted to my father again delivering muffins. My sister Mary suceeded my mother's position at Eckard's so we were able to keep tabs on Arreta. We are sorry for your loss and will keep you in our thoughts.
