Robert Van Slooten, 67, passed away on October 10, 2007 in Ipswich, England. Bob was born on May 26, 1940 in Fair Lawn, New Jersey to David, Sr. and Emily Van Slooten. Predeceased by his parents, Bob is survived by his former wife, Jenny, Coddenham, England; his son, Michael (Emma), Ipswich, England; his daughter, Kay, Chicago, IL; and his two grandsons, Sebastian and Oliver, both of Ipswich. Also surviving are two brothers, David, Jr. (Joan) and Richard (Larraine); and a sister, Joan (Mike) Paino; along with their extended families. Bob was a graduate of Greene Central School and went on to study economics at Colgate and Iowa State University where he earned his PhD. Most of his adult life was spent in England, where he taught economics at both Cardiff and Bristol University, and then became an economic advisor with the Ministry of Trade in London. He worked on several committees dedicated to controlling ozone depleting substances, including: The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, the Global Atmosphere Division of the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Montreal Protocol. Following his retirement, Bob worked as a consultant in economic and world environmental affairs and also became involved with his local government. A love for horses was sustained throughout Bob's life, with his latest companion known as BFG (Big Friendly Giant).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 10th, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in Greene. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Bob's name to the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, N. Chenango St., Greene, N.Y. 13778 or to Boy Scout Troop #55, c/o The Greene Rotary Club, PO Box 384, Greene, N.Y. 13778.
