Elizabeth "Betty" Gray
of Norwich
Elizabeth "Betty" Gray, 96, of Norwich, and former longtime Sidney resident, passed away Saturday evening, November 24, in the Ideal Senior Living Center of Endicott. Betty was born in Scranton, Pa., in January of 1911, the daughter of William and Emelie Roberts Richards. While growing up she lived in the Scranton area, where she attended and graduated from the Scranton Central High School. She continued her education by attending the Lackawanna Business College, which was also located in Scranton. On November 30, 1935, in Scranton, she married Gary N. Gray, Sr. Following her marriage, she and her husband lived for a short time in Binghamton, and in 1939 they moved to Sidney. While living in Sidney, she was employed by The Hospital in Sidney, as a supervisor of medical records, retiring in January of 1977 and continued to keep her home in Sidney, until 1985 when she moved to Norwich. Betty was a patient, steady lady who was the anchor of her family home and was loved by all who knew her. She was kept busy running the family home and taking care of the children while her husband worked. She enjoyed reading and doing needlepoint. Betty is survived by her children, Gary N. (Victoria) Gray, Jr., Norwich, and Richard L. (Stephanie) Gray, Apalachin; her four grandchildren, Jeffrey N. Gray, Holbrook, Ariz., Anissa A. (Chris) Custer, Willowsprings, N.C., Christopher N. (Karen) Gray, New Rochelle, N.Y., and Mindi A. Gray, Apalachin. Also surviving are her seven great-grandchildren, David LJ Noel Gray, Hagen N. Gray, Lyric N. Gray, Alaina Custer, Spencer Custer, Nicholas Custer and Meredith Gray; her sister-in-law, Shirley Richards Jones, N.J.; and a daughter-in-law, Jane Gray, Fairport, N.Y. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Gary N. Gray Sr.; her son, Steven A. Gray; and her brother, William F. Richards.
Funeral services for Betty will be held on Saturday, December 1, at 2:00 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Joseph Connolly, Pastor of the United Church of Christ First Congregational will officiate. Interment will be on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in the Prospect Hill Cemetery of Sidney. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday from 12:00 noon until the time of service at 2:00 p.m.
