Doris Leavens Obituary

LEAVENS, DORIS M., 65, died December 4, 2008 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Catherine A. (Mullaney) Leavens. 'Miss Dottie' was a teacher's assistant at John Hope Settlement House for the past 25 years.

She loved being a part of the children's lives she touched every day. She is survived by her 2 sons, Eugene H. Leavens and his wife, Charlotte of Providence and Keith E. Leavens and his wife, Maria of East Providence. She also leaves 2 sisters, Patricia A. Pierce of Cranston and Anne Marie Long of Middletown, CT. Dottie was the grandmother of 10 grandchildren and great-grandmother of 3. She was a much loved aunt, great-aunt, cousin, and friend to many more. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 9am from Bell Funeral Home, 571 Broad St., Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in Holy Name Church, Camp St. Calling Hours Monday 4-7pm in Bell Funeral Home. Burial will be private. At the request of the family donations in her memory to John Hope Settlement House or Home and Hospice Care of RI would be greatly appreciated by her family.www.BellFuneralHome.com

I remember Ms. Dottie from my years at John Hope Day Care. And then she had my two children there. I am going to miss her arts and crafts and the wonderful way she just loved on all of the children she came to know. She is loved and will be missed. My condolences to the family.

To Dottie's family, I have such wonderful memories of Dottie. Although I hadn't seen her in 45 years, we touched each others lives growing up. I lived next door to her growing up and our friendship was a happy one. She was always the nicest of people even then. I offer you my deepest sympathies.
