Born and raised in the Midwest, I was new to Rhode Island in 1968 when I was hired to teach at Roger Williams. My first stop on the way to Bristol was at Avila's Sunoco where I was welcomed and given a brief history of the area. Over the next 39 years I sent a number of students with auto problems to Avila's, knowing they'd always be treated fairly. The favors done to those students were many and became almost legendary. Frank's cheerful approach to life was an important part of my early understanding of New England's ways, and I'm thankful for the pleasure of knowing him. Many of us will miss him for years.

When i heard the sad news about my dear uncle frank, it made me stop for a few moments and think about how much i care about my family...no matter how distant we all get as we grow older, we all share some of the same memories from the past...some of my oldest are hanging around at the sunoco gas station and pumping gas...at that age, it was just a blast to be allowed to do it...

wow how the years have passed...

R.I.P. uncle frank...one of the happiest men i've ever met...

It seems like I was just there sharing breakfast with Uncle Frank and spending time together, talking about this year's blueberry harvest. As I sit here, I'm looking at a great picture I took last year of Uncle Frank and my Dad, sitting on Voo Voo's green tractor. I even got to drive it! Woo hoo! I have so many memories of this special man and will truly treasure the beautiful, handmade shell tree he created himself (how DID he manage to do that?) and gave to Matt and me on our wedding day. There are so many of us that will miss Uncle Frank and his happy face, but I know that he is now happier in heaven with the love of his life, Aunt Lorraine. When I travel to Portugal next month, I will visit the village church that Uncle Frank talked about years ago and pray a special prayer for my favorite uncle, who will be greatly missed but remembered with lots of love.
