i was one of dr. mccabe's students in the late 60s. as a jock-turned-english-major, i feared i was in over my head both with the material and the level of instruction. he recognized this fairly soon. it didn't matter to him that i was not the sharpest tool in the shed. he always treated me with respect and patience. through his kindness and his teaching style, as well as his love for literature and its value in our lives, he managed to inspire me to persevere, rise to the occasion, and remain in the class. i'm very glad i did. i became an english teacher in alternative settings with reluctant learners. i still tell a few professor mccabe "stories." as a teacher, if i am able to make enough of an impression on a student to last 40 minutes after class, i am happy. professor mccabe's mark is still here 40 years after class! i am truly sorry for your loss and will keep you all in my prayers.

Professor McCabe was truly an inspiring teacher and elegant thinker. I also was privileged to have enjoyed his brilliance and sly humor. I am a teacher now and still use his phrase to exhort my students to "marinate in the poetry." His tests were rigorous and demanded preparation. When I consider the platonic ideal for an instructor as well as a role model for the art and science of teaching I think of Professor McCabe. My sympathies to his family.

I extend my sincere condolences to Dr. McCabe's family. He was one of my English professors at URI when I was a young undergraduate English major and he was my most FAVORITE professor I ever had at the University ! His mind was incredible. His presentations were riveting. He remembered students' name better than any other professor I ever had for class, as early as the second or third class of the semester, as I recall. He was wry and funny and very, very intelligent !!! I loved his classes more than any others ! I had heard at some point about his building a home, chimney and all, I was told, and it must be a well planned and well built home. His mind was so keen and sharp ! Please take care and be comforted as much as possible.
