Granville Watson Obituary

WATSON SR., GRANVILLE T. 'CHICK', 89, of Chestnut Avenue surrounded by his family passed away peacefully on August 9, 2008. He was the loving and caring husband of the late Dorothy A. (Cotter) Watson celebrating 58 years of marriage together.

Born in Lincoln, a son of the late Granville and Emma (Parkinson) Watson, he had lived in Lincoln all of his life except for the past two years when he lived with his son's family in Riverside.

He retired in 1983 after 35 years with the former Providence Gas Company working as a meter reader.

He served proudly as a World War II veteran attached with the 118th Medical Battalion in the South Pacific. He arrived there in 1942 at Vanuato Island on the USS Coolidge which sank when it hit a mine.

He was a communicant of St. Jude's Church, Lincoln and St. Brendan's Church, Riverside.

He liked an evening of dancing with 'Dot' and their friends. He enjoyed golfing as a member of the White Eagles Golf League, bowling with the Hindley Bowling League, woodcarving with the Barrington Senior Center woodcarvers and was a lifelong fisherman.

He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia A. Cote and her husband, Michael of Smithfield; his son, Granville T. 'Tom' Watson, Jr. and his wife, Patricia of Riverside; and several nieces and nephews. He loved being 'Grampa' or 'Papa' to Greg, Jeff, Erica, Andrew, Matt, Sara and Grace. He was the brother of the late Edna Phetteplace.

His funeral will be held SATURDAY, AUGUST 16 at 8 A.M. from BELLOWS-FALSO FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Road, Lincoln with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 A.M. in St. Jude's Church, 301 Front Street, Lincoln. Burial, with military honors, will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.

Chick will always hold a special place in my heart. I was his tenant on Chestnut Ave. for 15 years. Not only was he funny, kind and caring, but he treated me like his own daughter and I'm grateful for having the opportunity to know such a wonderful person.
