Thomas Kane Obituary

KANE, JUDGE THOMAS J., SR., 84, of Knollridge Dr., No. Smithfield, died Saturday, August 30, 2008 in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of the late Frances A. (Wrenne) Kane. Born in Achusnet, MA, he was the son of the late James L. and Marguerite E. (Lannon) Kane, Sr.

Mr. Kane was a 1942 graduate of Blackstone High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. In 1950 he received a Law Degree from Boston College School of Law and was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar. He was later admitted to the United States District Court and First Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Kane conducted a General Practice of Law from 1950-until his death with offices in No. Smithfield, and formerly in Burrillville and Woonsocket. From 1952-1962 he was appointed as Clerk and Acting Justice of the 9th Judicial District for the State of Rhode Island. From 1963-1968 Mr. Kane was the Prosecuting Attorney and General Counsel for the City of Woonsocket. In 1969 he was appointed as the clerk and Associate Justice of the 12th Judicial District for the State of Rhode Island and from 1970-1994 he was a Justice of the Peace for the State of Rhode Island. Additionally, he was a former member of the Woonsocket Council Knights of Columbus, Moylan Assembly as a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and the Rotary Club of Woonsocket. He was a Past Commander of the Andrew F. Young Post American Legion and was Chief of the Civil Defense Police Unit.

He is survived by two sons, David Kane and his wife Sally of Pomfret, CT and Thomas Kane, Jr. and his wife Michaela of Narragansett, two daughters, Deborah Kane of Pomfret, CT and Amy Maratea and her husband Scott of So. Kingstown, his grandchildren, Abby, Meghan and Gavin Maratea and his siblings, James Kane and Alice Callanan, both of Woonsocket and Teresa Chartier of No. Smithfield. He was the brother of the late William Kane.

His funeral will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 9AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, Church St., Slatersville. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Farm St., Blackstone. Calling hours are Tuesday from 5-8PM.
