Albert Brindamour Obituary

BRINDAMOUR, REV. ALBERT H., 86, pastor emeritus of St. James Church in Manville died on August 30, 2008.

Born in West Warwick, Rhode Island, a son of the late Joseph and Georgiana (Fortier) Brindamour, he attended St. John the Baptist Parochial School in West Warwick.

In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Sherbrooke, P.Q., Canada and at St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. He was ordained a priest on June 16, 1946 at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence by Bishop Francis P. Keough.

Father Brindamour served as assistant pastor in three parishes: at St. Mark in Jamestown (1946-47); at St. Aloysius in Woonsocket (1947-58); and at St. Ann, also in Woonsocket (1958-68). In October 1968, he was appointed pastor of St. James Church in Manville and remained there until June 1993 when he retired as pastor emeritus.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Father Brindamour was also Assistant National Chaplain of the Union St. Jean-Baptiste Society from 1972 until 2000; and Dean of the Cumberland/Lincoln #13 Deanery (1976).

After his retirement, Father Brindamour retained his residence at St. James rectory, but for 2 years traveled exclusively in Canada and Alaska in a small van. In later years, he spent the winter in Florida, golfing and saying Mass for the visiting French-Canadians. In 1997, he moved into Precious Blood rectory in Woonsocket and helped with the ministry in that parish. In January 2004, he became a resident of St. Antoine Residence in North Smithfield, Rhode Island.

Father Brindamour had nine brothers, namely: Arthur, Adrien, Florimond, Rosaire, Bernard, Henri, Ovide, Francois, Normand; and five sisters, namely, Elizabeth Lefebvre, Edesse Roberts-Burlingame-Schuler, Agnes Kelley, Genevieve Harris and Helen Corneau, all deceased.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews, two of whom are priests of the Diocese of Providence, namely, Rev. Edward J. Kelley, Major, US Army Chaplain and Rev. Maurice L. Brindamour, pastor of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Woonsocket. Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at St. James Church, 33 Division Street, Manville, R.I. from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., followed by a Parish Mass.

A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for the Repose of his Soul on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at St. James Church in Manville. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Manville.

Uncle Al is always in my memories. Best Godfather ever! My brother, Rev. Maurice Brindamour is now in residence at The Villa St. Antoine as was Uncle Al. We are so grateful for Moe's recovery as well as mine from Heart Bypass last October. God is good and generous. We welcomed a new grand-nephew, this year. He too has recovered from heart surgery. We miss you, Uncle Al!

Uncle Al was my godfather and I could not have asked for a better spiritual guide.
I had the privilege of working as his organist at St. James in Mannville. I was always invited to lunch after the last mass. We had such great conversations and wonderful martinis!
His last visit was at our farm in Harlingen, TX . He and Aunt Helena were headed for Alaska.
I regret being unable to be at his funeral but his memory will live in my heart for the rest of my days.

My uncle Al will always be close to my heart. His brother (my father - Bernard) chose Al, his youngest brother, as Godfather to my dad's first child (Aline Brindamour, now Godfrey). Uncle Al showed up every Christmas eve with a present for his Goddaughter...and always another one for the three of us boys to share (a basketball, a game, etc.). I'm sure his smile inspired all three boys to study for the priesthood ! Among us, only Father Moe made it all the way. We'll miss and pray for him always.
