JONES, GEORGE DICKINSON, passed away unexpectedly on September 5, 2008, while visiting relatives in Houston, Texas. Mr. Jones retired from Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1982 and completed his accomplished career in the steel industry as the Vice President and General Manager of Dominion Rebar.
George was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on July 5, 1924. He was the eldest child of George Kenneth Jones and Alice (Swanson) Jones. He married Florence Wallander in 1950 and they became long-term residents of Needham, Massachusetts before retiring and relocating in 1986 to The Bald Peak Colony Club in Melvin Village, New Hampshire.
George is survived by the love of his life and wife of 58 years, Florence Jones; their devoted and loving daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Robert Hallinger of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Susan and Tom Brandt of Houston, Texas; three wonderful grandchildren, Kelly Hallinger, Brent Hallinger and Lander Brandt; his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and John Milus of Conway, South Carolina; his sister-in-law, Mrs. William (Alice Wallander) Russell of Cranston, Rhode Island; and his nieces and nephews.
Upon returning from military duty in World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps serving in the China-Burma-India Theatre, George entered Brown University where he played basketball for the Bruins. He graduated from Brown in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering and was recruited by Bethlehem Steel where he immediately entered their management-training program. He completed his 33-year career with Bethlehem Steel as the Assistant District Sales Manager for the Northeast Region. He was a past president of both The Engineers' Club of Boston and the Boston Madison Square Garden Club. An avid golfer, he was a member of The Bald Peak Colony Club and The Brae Burn Country Club. He was a thirty-second degree Mason, a member of The American Legion and he supported several charitable and community organizations.
George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He gave generously of his time and kind spirit to his family, friends and neighbors. His love, companionship, kindness, support, wisdom, and gregarious personality will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
His funeral service will be held at the Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick, Rhode Island on Thursday, September 11 at 12 Noon. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours Thursday from 11-12. Burial, with military honors, will be in The Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, Rhode Island.
