Margery Bates Obituary

BATES, MARGERY L. (BAILEY), 97, of Old Diamond Hill Road died Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Emerald Bay Manor, Cumberland. She was the wife of the late A. Leo Bates.

Born in Cumberland, a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Lee) Bailey, she had lived in Lincoln for 53 years before returning to Cumberland 36 years ago.

Mrs. Bates was a school teacher at Lincoln Middle School for 38 years, retiring in 1971.

She was a 1933 graduate of Rhode Island College.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her funeral and burial were private. Arrangements by BELLOWS-FALSO FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Road, Lincoln.

Mrs. Bates was a fine history teacher that made us feel and appreciate our history. She was appropriately strict for her day, could spot someone chewing gum blindfolded, and had a great sense of humor. I am a history buff today because of a few teachers like her. She was a blessing from God.
