William McDermott Obituary

McDERMOTT, WILLIAM J., 83, of Collins Court, died Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at the Hattie Ide Chaffee Home. Devoted husband of Ruth 'Ginny' (Madden) McDermott for 57 years.

He was born in Boston, Ma, a son of the late Bartholomew J. & Mary Ellen (Owens) McDermott. Mr. McDermott was a sales service director for Speidel for 24 years before retiring in 1992. He attended Yale University, Boston University & Boston College Law. At 70 years old he passed a CPA exam to become an accountant. He was a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps serving during WW II. He participated in operations at Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, Saipan, Marianas Islands & Tinian.

Besides his wife he leaves 6 children Kathleen Johnson, Carole O'Gara, Andrea, David, Robert & John McDermott, 1 brother; Paul McDermott, 1 sister; Ruth McDermott & 6 grandchildren, Sara, Jeff, Liam, Molly, Jill & Ryan. Brother of the late Hugh McDermott.

His funeral will be held Monday at 9 A.M. from the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Ave., East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in St. Luke Church, Washington Road. Burial with Military Honors will be in Forest Chapel Cemetery. Calling hours Sunday 5-8. In lieu of flowers donations to Dialysis Support Services Fund, 9 Plenty St., Providence, R.I. 02907 would be appreciated.

Aunt Ginny and family,
We are so sorry that uncle Bill has passed. Please know you are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. Uncle Bill was a great family man, brother and uncle and he will be sadly missed.
