Homer Trickett Obituary

TRICKETT, REV. DR. HOMER L., 95, of Pound Rd., an American Baptist Minister, died Wednesday at Kent Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret M. (Miller) Trickett to whom, at the time of her death in 2005, he had been married for sixty-five years. He was the beloved father of Dr. Paul L. Trickett and his wife Gloria Howard of Providence and a foster parent of Claudette Ross of Easton, MD and Deardra MacDonald of Florida.

Born in Preston County, WV he was the son of the late William J. and Emma Mae (Triplett) Trickett and the eldest of their eleven children. His sisters Nellie Riley and Lucille Metheny and his brothers James, Robert, Ray and Gay Trickett all predeceased him. The remaining members of his family are Grace Bennett of Ridgely, WV, Opal Martin of Kingwood, WV, Evelyn Brown of Laguna Hills, CA and Harry Trickett of Reedsville, WV.

He was a 1936 graduate of Salem College in Salem, WV and a 1940 graduate of Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, PA. In 1958 Brown University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree.

From 1940-1979 Dr. Trickett was called to serve nine different churches as pastor including the First Baptist Church in America in Providence where he served from 1955-1970. Following his retirement in 1979 he served several other churches as Associate Pastor or as interim minister including Phillips Memorial Baptist Church in Cranston where he was a member and served as Associate Pastor from 1984-1997. During these years he served on boards and committees associated with Crozer Seminary, the American Baptist Historical Society, the American Baptist Churches USA, the American Baptist Churches of RI and Rhode Island State Council of Churches.

He was a mason and a past master of What Cheer Lodge 21, now affiliated with Adelphoi Lodge 33. He also served the Masonic Grand Lodge of RI as a Right Worshipful District Deputy Grand Master.

His funeral service will be held in Phillips Memorial Baptist Church, 565 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston on Sunday, October 26 at 3:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Ave., West Warwick on Saturday from 2:00-5:00 PM. A private burial will take place on Monday in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. I am so sorry to hear that Mr. Trickett passed away, & so sorry for your loss. It is never easy to lose a parent.
