Helen Carroll Madeiros

MADEIROS, HELEN CARROLL, 90, of Warwick since 1949, passed away Saturday at the West View Health Center. Beloved wife of the late Joseph Madeiros, and loving daughter of the late James and Annie (Trayner) Carroll.

She was the loving mother to Keith J. Madeiros and Jo-Ann J. Wrage; also loving grandmother of 5 and great-grandmother of 11. She was the loving grandmother to the late Lori Wilding and loving sister of the late Rae Cooper-Atwell.

Born in Attleboro, MA, Helen grew up in the Mt. Pleasant section of Providence, where she excelled in the athletic sports of Field Hockey, Basketball and Fencing at Central High School and Nickerson House. Helen has the distinction of being one of the first female lifeguards in RI. Helen began college at 55 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Rhode Island. She taught school and then helped single mothers and their children working as a Case Manager for the State of Rhode Island. She was a Communicant of St. Peter Church and also a member of its Women's Club as well as the Gaspee Senior Citizens Club. Helen was a woman ahead of her time.

Funeral Thursday at 9:00 a.m. from the Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad Street at Park Avenue, Cranston, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter Church, 350 Fair Street, Warwick. Burial will be in Mt. St. Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket. Calling hours Wednesday 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimers Assn., 245 Waterman St., Providence, RI 02906.
