Anne Hummel Obituary

HUMMEL, ANNE C., 83 of Old Saybrook, CT, formerly of Barrington, died Dec. 5th at home. She was the wife of the late Charles E. Hummel, president of the former Barrington College. They were married 53 years.

She was born in Asheville, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Richard Austin and Annie Reaux Jones Childs. After graduating from Wellesley College in 1947 she worked as a lay minister with college students throughout the South for Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship. She co-authored with her husband numerous Bible study guides for Inter Varsity Press. She later worked with special needs children at Elm Park Daycare Center in Worcester in the 1970s and 1980s and most recently was active in Grace Episcopal Church in Old Saybrook, where she had lived the past 14 years.

She leaves four children: Elizabeth Hummel of Richmond, VA; Charles E. Hummel III of Southington, CT; Richard Hummel of Worcester and James Hummel of Barrington; two brothers, Wylie Childs of California and Richard Childs Jr. of Ohio; and five grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Brevard Childs.

Her funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 336 Main Street, Old Saybrook.
