Dear Sal,

In the years that I have known you, you have occupied a space in my heart that not even my own biological father occupied. Your wisdom, strength of character, generosity of spirit and gentle nature have made everyone who came to know you, love you dearly.

Many people have told me how Sal was like a father to them, and I ask, how can one man who never had any children of his own be regarded as a father to so many? I believe the answer can only be that Salvatore DeLibero was a living example of the phrase that “You don’t have to have children to be a wonderful parent.”

During these past few months, we have all been so sad to see you suffer greatly, and now we must tell ourselves to be happy that you are finally at peace. Those of us who remain, grieve not for you, because you are at rest waiting to be called (or possibly already have been called to sit at the right hand of the father) with such persons as Carolina and Mario Corsi, Rose Gianquitti, Tony Vellucci, Etta Verrecchia, Frances and Augie DeNucci-Iatarola, John Hearn,Sr., Laura Veasey, Mike Amatelli and Laura DeLibero, just to name a few, but we grieve for ourselves because we must live out the remainder of our days without ever having another opportunity to look into your kind and gentle eyes, to hold your strong and supportive hand, or to hear your wise words.

You always told me that “we all have to die,” and that you did not want anyone to be sad at your passing. I must now take comfort in hoping that we will all meet again someday and I know that those of us who remain will live out our days with your memory etched into our minds and in our hearts, so that you will live forever and eternally be with us all.

We love you, Sal, and we will miss you greatly.
