Josephine Milburn Obituary

MILBURN, JOSEPHINE FISHEL, 79, of Hanover, NH, died Saturday, September 8, 2007, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

She was born in 1928 in Lynchburg, Virginia, as the only child of Sol Buxton Fishel and Mary Robinson Fishel. Her early years were spent in Virginia and North Carolina. Later the family would move every few years in connection with her father's work; this led to her attending high school in Wichita, Kansas. Josephine pursued a career in Political Science, obtaining a B.A. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. at Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. at Duke University. Following her studies at Duke, she spent a year in Wellington, New Zealand, studying aspects of the New Zealand Labour Party. While in Wellington she married Ronald Milburn; the two had met the previous year at Duke University.

In professional activities, Josephine Milburn held academic positions at Simmons College, Boston, and at the University of Rhode Island; at URI she rose to the rank of Full Professor. In Political Science her special areas of interest were: African political systems (South Africa, Tanzania, Ghana and several other West African countries); the British Commonwealth; New England Political Parties; and Women in Politics. Among her several books are 'British Business and Ghanaian Independence', and 'Governments of the Commonwealth'.

While living in the Northeast, Ms. Milburn resided, at different times, in Brookline, Massachusetts, Providence, Rhode Island, Dorchester, New Hampshire, and Hanover, New Hampshire. She traveled extensively, during various leaves, to do research and/or teaching. Thus, she spent a year at Oxford University, England, another year in New Zealand, time in Australia, a year in Germany, various times in Africa, and a year in Indonesia.

Josephine was a fine singer and a strong swimmer. She also enjoyed hiking, which included many hikes in the New Hampshire hills, two walks over New Zealand's Milford Track and the climbing of Kilimanjaro.

Josephine Milburn is survived by her husband Ron, by their daughter Rosemary and her three children, Sophie, Corrine and Robin, and by their son, Jeffrey and his two children, Lee and Annette.

Those who knew Josephine will remember her for her warm personality and her infectious smile.

Funeral ceremonies were private, involving immediate family.

Dear Ron and family,

Lauren and I were saddened to hear of Josephine's passing. We remember her fondly from chance meetings in your office on the 2nd floor and various chemistry parties. She was always so friendly, quirky and fun! We hope you are doing well Ron and that the inspiration for your tunes is still flowing thick and fast! With warmth and sympathy, Lauren and David.

Dear Ron and family,

I have very fond memories of Josephine, dating back to my first year as a member of the B.U. Chemistry Department (1969-70), and including a visit to your home in Providence. She had a sunny, welcoming disposition that made her a joy to talk to. I also remember thinking how modern the two of you were -- intellectual, cultured, active and cosmopolitan! Jo (with Ron) led a full and productive life -- one to celebrate, not to mourn. You all have my sympathy for your loss and best wishes for the future.

Dear Ron, Rosemary and Jeffrey
My deepest felt symphaty at the passing of Josephine. As I read her obituary I can't help but feel grateful to have been, ever so small, a part of your lives. When I first came to you in Brookline, MA I remember meeting you Ron and Josephine and thinking wow such energy, such knowledge... what was wonderful too is that she always shared these gifts. We climbed mountains and skied together (even when Rosemary was a little infant. Josephine taught me how to make icecream, what turning we did. The trip to meet her family in NC I still remember as well as rolling the land in Dorchester to make a tennis court... Josephine will be remembered by me forever.
I pray for you all that G-d will give you the grace to deal with the loss and may He fill your hearts and comfort you at this time.
With much love and affection,
Sonja Hoekstra

Dear Rosemary, Kent and family,

Our sympathies on the loss of your mother. The obituary was testament to a woman of great intellect who took risks and enjoyed so much about life. Our thoughts are with you all and your extended family and friends.

As an undergrad at URI (1976-77), I took 2 courses with Prof. MIlburn: African Politics and Urban Politics. She was continually improvising the course formats, assigning each student to represent a given city or country in class. She also assigned students to several-member panels, which competed with each other as part of our course grading. A most memorable experience occurred during the final session of our Urban Politics course at the Faculty Center, with access to an open bar.
