Eng Luke Obituary

LUKE, ENG LUN, of East Greenwich, passed away in Kent Hospital on September 29, 2007, at the age of ninety-eight, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Luke was born in Toisan Village, Guangzhou (Canton) Province, China in 1909.

Wife of the late Tin Cheung Luke and beloved mother of a son, the late Henry D. Luke, she is survived by four loving daughters: Irene Hope of East Greenwich, Mary Luke of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Elizabeth Gagner of Hilo, Hawaii and Jane Hill of San Antonio, Texas; daughter-in-law Anna Luke of Lincoln, Rhode Island; twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Luke emigrated to the US in 1939 and lived in Providence most of her life. Her late husband, Tin Cheung Luke and late son, Henry D. Mrs. Luke came to the US via Seattle, Washington, and later became a US citizen. She traveled extensively throughout the world, and returned to China several times in her lifetime.

Mrs. Luke was an exceptionally talented seamstress and loved all kinds of handicrafts. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, and music. She was a wonderful homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and, she will be dearly missed by everyone. Mrs. Luke was one of the founding members of the Chinese Christian Church of Rhode Island, and the oldest member of both the Chinese Church and Beneficent Congregational Church. Mrs. Luke first became a Christian in China, and was later baptized in Hong Kong.

Visitation will be at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home at 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick on Sunday September 30 from 4-8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 1 at 11:00 AM at the Chinese Christian Church at 333 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Johnston.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Chinese Christian Church of Rhode Island or Beneficent Congregational Church in Providence. Information and condolences at www.carpenterjenks.com

I have many fond memories of Mrs. Luke starting on Washington Avenue.
She (unlike the rest of us) did not seem to change over the years. She was an amazing lady who loved her family and lived to see her them grow and prosper.
A true matriarch......

With heartfelt condolences,
