I’m saddened to learn that John has passed; he will be greatly missed by his many friends and acquaintances in the New England Chapter of the Old Antarctic Explorers Assn.
John and Peggy were regular attendees at our meetings throughout New England and with six or more seasons in Antarctica, John always had many fascinating stories of working and existing on the Ice as a Seabee in the early days of Operation Deep Freeze. John was part of the Navy’s initial effort to build and establish science bases for the US Antarctic Research Program – thanks to amazing men like John, the US Antarctic Program leads and supports all other countries in scientific research on the continent.
A self-sufficient and proud man who didn’t rely on others during his lifetime, I know John didn’t easily adjust to living within the limitations dictated by his poor health over the last year or so. It is a comfort to know he is now free from those physical limitations and is at peace.
