Bertha Summer was my best friend Arlene Meyer's mom. Together they were quite a pair. Always on the go: out for coffee, lunch, shopping. People would look forward to seeing them. Everyone loved Bertha, and it made you smile just to see how they enjoyed their day and by their obvious devotion to each other. In May my husband and I were honored to be included at Bertha's 100 year-old birthday celebration. Bertha even gave a speech. And as I watched her glowing with pride, surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, I remembered one of my favorite Jewish words Bertha taught me: kvell.

I have known Bertha Summer since I was 7 years old. She was like a second "Mom" to me but in recent years I referred to her as "Beautiful Bertha." Her beauty and joie-de-vivre was outstanding. Until very recently when Arlene and I could not remember someone's name, Bertha could. She was a very loved woman and will be missed by her family and frineds. She will never be forgotten
