To my Mother: (Jean Smith)
Some say, it is the way people act as parents that reflects onto their children. It is in every parent's heart to bring their children up differently from the way they were brought up. A parent's natural instinct is to shelter their children from the harsh reality that is the world we live in today. Upon enduring life's challenges and hardships as a parent, the child will observe from a safe distance. Sometimes, parents can instill good qualities into their children without even saying a word. This is the case with my Mother. While experiencing the strength of my Mother, this braced me for the road ahead.

Parents are viewed by their children as leaders. A good leader should lead by example, regardless of the situation. One-hundred percent, and then some, was my Mother's way of life. When a follower should fail the leader, it is not fear that should be struck into the heart of the follower, nor should the follower take advantage of the leader. The sign of an exceptional leader is when the follower has no fear, but disappointment in his or her own self. The guilt of letting down such an exceptional leader would be punishment enough for the follower. With that said, my Mother was an outstanding leader. These are the qualities my Mother instilled in me to keep me as straight as an arrow, even though I would veer off the road a bit.

Just when I thought I had seen all that could be seen, and learned all that I could learn, my Mother stared cancer directly in the face. Anyone who knew this wonderful woman would know, she would fight until the bitter end. That is the gospel truth, in everything she did. Take a moment to think of a time when my Mother backed down, even when she should have. She didn't. The time had come where the caretaker was in need of care. Even in her darkest of moments, she was never concerned with herself, but the well-being of others around her. Her strength and will left me speechless.

I'll make this promise to my Mother, and myself. If ever there comes a time where I am weak, when my feet can't take another step, when my lips can't mutter another word, I will think of my Mother... and drive on. One-hundred percent, and then some. It is time for me to be the leader. I thank you for all the memories, the unconditional love, and what you've made me.

Sarah and I will watch over Bobby, as well as be there for each other. You've left us in good hands, as he is a wonderful man. Bobby, I want to express my gratitude for all that you've done for Sarah and I, and most importantly... my Mother. I wish I could express in words how truly grateful I am that she had you. Thank you so much.

I love you Mom.
