Irene was born in Detroit as the daughter of the late Francis and Frances (Rudnik) Bonkowski. She married the late Paul Owsen also in Detroit. Irene and her husband moved from Allen Park more than 30 years ago to the Traverse City Area. She was a loving wife and mother who thoroughly enjoyed her time as a homemaker.
Irene enjoyed time in her garden, was a talented seamstress, and a fabulous cook. Her keen sense of humor and quick wit always livened up the conversation. She had a lovely singing voice and looked forward to sing-a-longs while at the Pavilions.
Surviving Irene is her daughter, Karen (Owsen) Leaver of Traverse City, a granddaughter, Rachel Leaver, and sister-in-law Doris Bonkowski.
Irene is preceded in death by her husband Paul, son James and brother Arthur Bonkowski.
Funeral services for Irene will take place at 3 p.m. today, Aug. 31, with visitation from 1-3 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery. Pastor Justin Grimm will officiate the services.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
