Lucy Hilbert Obituary
Lucy was born in Leelanau County on Nov. 4, 1931, to Grace and Alfred F. Becker. Following high school, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Central Michigan University. On Nov. 20, 1955, she married Lee H. Hilbert in Suttons Bay.
Lucy was an elementary school teacher at Glenn Loomis Elementary School, having been hired by Glenn Loomis. She taught there for many years and impacted the lives of many students.
She loved working on crafts and doing tole painting, but enjoyed most of all being with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Lee; two daughters, Debra Hilbert of Otsego and Patricia (DuWayne) Wilson of Roscommon; her granddaughters, Melissa (Benjamin) Shifferd of Williamsburg and MacKenzie Wilson of Traverse City; her great-grandchildren, Benjamin Shifferd II, and Madeline Shifferd and her brother, Edgar Becker, of Traverse City.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law, JoAnn Becker.
Visitation will take place Monday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Services will be private.
Lucy loved flowers, so floral tributes would be most welcomed by the family. For those who would like to make a monetary contribution in Lucy's memory, please select your favorite charity or one that would benefit school-aged children.

On behave of the entire Hilbert Clan, I would just like to thank everyone for their lovely comments. Lucy was my Grandma, and it is so wonderful to know that she touched so many lives. She always had the best stories from her teaching years, and even up until her final days she was a teacher at heart. I will never forget her wagging finger or her determination to make sure she was heard and understood. She was a remarkable woman, and it is comforting to know that she will be missed by many through out the country. Thank you again, your comments and thoughts have been very comforting and helpful through this tough time.

I also had Mrs. Hilbert for my fifth grade teacher at Glenn Loomis. I thought she was a great teacher & I remember her telling kids that were misbehaving," I'm going to have to put you over my checkered apron if you don't behave". Even though she never did it, the kids knew she meant business. I ran into her a few years ago at Cracker Barrel & had a nice chat with her. I think of her often & she was a great lady.

Again, Mrs. Hilbert gets the award for my absolute Favorite teacher at Glenn Loomis!! She was the only person (besides my mom) who would listen to me practice my saxophone during recess!! I loved her deeply and think of her often. Much sympathy to her family - she will be missed by many, many students and I hope this love that she shared with all of us will now come and comfort you at this time. What a great person she was. Mrs. Hilbert was my 5th grade teacher at Glenn Loomis also. She was a great teacher, very caring, but very "firm" also. She will be missed very much. My thoughts are with her family.

Mrs. Hilbert was my 5th grade teacher at Glenn Loomis. She was nurturing, but firm! On more than one occasion, the expression "Great Sons of Caesar" could be heard coming from her classroom!
Well...I went on to become a teacher with TCAPS. I would often run into her and her husband grocery shopping at Tom's (14th). She would always stop and talk, and was very pleased that I had chosen to become a teacher.
Teachers really do touch the lives of their students! She will be missed.

Mrs. Hilbert was my 5th grade teacher. She was one of the best teachers around. She cared about everyone so much. It was a great class to have been in. My sympathies to the family.

Mrs. Hilbert was my 5th grade teacher also. She was a great teacher and I have remembered her as one of my favorites. We have lived in Idaho for nearly 40 years - we return to Traverse City each summer and always make a trip by Glenn Loomis and talk about our teachers and friends from those years. Thank you to her family for sharing her with us. She made a lasting impression on so many of her students.

Mrs. Hilbert was my 5th grade teacher. I have many fond memories at Glenn Loomis School, many of them are because of her. It was very nice to see her this past Spring at the Glenn Loomis farwell function. She had not changed at all! As one of the students whose life she impacted...my sympathy.

We are so sorry to hear that Lucy is gone. We extend our sympathy to her whole family and especially to Lee. Lucy and Lee's smiling faces always welcomed us to the MCHC gym. It was a joy to walk in and see them there together. Since we're now in Corning, N.Y. on a road trip, it won't be possible for us to attend visitation - we'll be thinking of you.

Dear Lee -- So very sorry to learn of Lucy's death. She was a very special lady. I first met her a number of years ago when we were both in Cardiac Rehab, and we graduated to Vital Step together. She was always as nice as could be to everyone, whether they were life-long friends or casual acquaintances. She will be greatly missed from the early Tuesday-Thursday class. You have our deepest sympathy, and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
