June Whitehurst Obituary

June K. Whitehurst NEW BERN - June Kuleen Whitehurst, 58, passed into Heaven to be with her Lord on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, following a courageous battle with cancer. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. Ms. Whitehurst grew up in Whitehurst Station and attended Bethel High School. She went on to earn her Master's degree in Special Education from East Carolina University. In health, she willingly gave of her time and resources to serve others, putting their needs before her own. She homeschooled her two daughters and taught special education students in both Pitt and Craven counties. She was an active attendee of both Temple Baptist Church in New Bern and Covenant United Methodist Church in Greenville. Ms. Whitehurst enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her three beautiful granddaughters, and Debbie Whitehurst, her best friend of more than 20 years. She was known by her kind words, generous spirit, beautiful smile, and sparkling eyes, which remained even as her health faded. She is survived by her parents, Ralph and Louise Whitehurst of Robersonville; daughters, Anna K. Welch and husband, David, of Eglin AFB, Florida, and Jaimi Whitehurst of New Bern; and grandchildren, Maddison Welch, Meredith Welch, and Marina June Welch. Ms. Whitehurst will be remembered as a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend by those whose lives she has touched. Although she will be missed, there is comfort in knowing that she is at peace in her Father's arms. They will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Jamie, I never had the pleasure of meeting your Mom. I spoke to her on the phone and she knew how deeply I loved her. Everyone in my Church reached out to her in prayer. We wanted so much for her to be well. She had so much to offer with her caring love, but Heaven needed her. I know how your heart must be grieving, but we will all pray for you to know a peace and understanding at this sad time. My love and prayers are with you. Love, Flora

Anna,
My mom told me this morning that she saw the notice in the paper for your mom. I am sorry for your loss. I will always remember your mom. All the field trips & activities that we did together. She was such a sweet lady. I know it has been years since we have seen each other, but I will always remember you both. You are in my prayers as I cannot imagine what you are feeling at this time.

Louise,
Please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of June. You may not remember me but we were in Precept Bible Study together several years ago. As a matter of fact, June and I were in the same Precept class about 20 years ago. She was a very sweet and genuine person. Find comfort and strength in the Lord and in knowing others are praying for you at this sad and difficult time.

Aunt Louise, Uncle Ralph, Anna & Jaimi - Your family has always had a special place in my heart. I have many special memories with June - I remember staying with her and helping to look after you two wide open girls, I can still hear her call me "sug" in that calm and comforting voice and Leagan still talks about our trip to Virginia when June helped her with some school work. She has left her special touch on so many lives. I will miss her dearly!

Jaimi and Anna: I am so sorry at the loss of your mother, so young. She was so precious and gentle. Ann and I will miss her. "For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: ... , yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; " (Job 19: 25-27) My wife is very sick (viral infection) and I must remain home with her today. We are sorry to miss the funeral. God bless you and yours... Tim and Ann Copeland

June was a person I always looked up to. Even though we hardly ever saw each other and never got a chance to "really" know each other, these last couple of years I have drawn a closeness to her that I can't explain. I will never forget our conversations and her beautiful smile. She inspired me in so many ways. Her strength and ongoing faith was remarkable. Anna and Jamie: I couldn't imagine the pain you are feeling, but I know and I know you both know your Mom is with our Lord Jesus and will always be looking down on the both of you. It's a unexplainable feeling when you have the peace and joy in your heart knowing your loved one has got a ticket into heaven and is having the chance to finally meet God face to face. When my papa died, it was hard for all of us, but we never doubted who he was spending his time with... and for that we were grateful. I will miss her always but will look forward to meeting her again someday.

I will always treasure the time I was able to spend with June at the hospital. I admire how her faith never waivered, even at the very very end. She didn't realize what an inspiration she was to so many people. She was so courageous and cared so very much about her family. I will never forget her words to her family "I am a winner, I will be with Jesus".
