King Harvey Obituary

PCHS ~ COUGARS King Harvey III (a.k.a. Junie) peacefully made his transitional journey from life temporal to life eternal while a patient at Shadyside Hospital at 6:01 a.m. on August 10, 2008, after his battle with cancer was completed.
King Harvey III, 45, was born and raised in New River, Va., by the union of his parents, King Harvey Jr. and Agnes (Shirley) Harvey. King had four other siblings. His family and close friends affectionately knew him as "Junie."
As a child, King developed his love for football and began playing midget football. He was educated through the Pulaski County School System and graduated from Pulaski County High School. He ran track and played basketball and football while in high school. Based on his phenomenal athletic ability, King earned a full-college scholarship and attended West Virginia University (WVU) from 1981 to 1985. He graduated with a BS degree in physical education. While in college he played football, based on his accomplishments, gained notoriety, and became "the local celebrity" in town. King established just about every offensive record in the books for a running back, and most of those records still stand. King received many awards and recognitions including four collegiate rings.
King Harvey III was an "Athlete Extraordinaire."
King confessed his belief and love for Christ at an early age and was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church in New River, Va. When he moved to Pittsburgh, he joined and was a current and faithful member of the Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, Pa. As his last days were nearing, King said, "If God is ready for me, then I am ready to go home. Because there is no place like home."
King moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., in April 1999 after he met the love of his life, Vicki Jones, affectionately known to King as "Pretty." King and Vicki were united in marriage on August 12, 2000. King worked in the social work field as a teacher and counselor at Pressley Ridge and Fayette Resources in Pittsburgh, Pa.
King loved his family and was best known for his southern hospitality and for making friends and family 'feel right at home.' He made it a point to always check up on everyone "to make sure that they were alright." He loved working out and keeping his body in good, physical condition and he won many awards and trophies for weight lifting. He took great pride in making sure that his home was well taken care of and always made sure that his yard was perfectly manicured. King loved cooking his favorite southern dishes, pork chops, beans and greens.
King Harvey III left behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Vicki Jones Harvey, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; parents, King Harvey Jr., of Washington, D.C., and Agnes (Shirley) Harvey, of Radford, Va.; daughter, Chateria Harvey, of Atlanta, Ga.; stepson, Shon Reed, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sisters, Charlene Jones, of Radford, Va., and Marcindy (Kevin) Harris, of Washington, D.C.; brother, Jeff Harvey, of Radford, Va.; sister, Teresa (William) Blake, of New River, Va.; grandmother, Thelma Jean Harvey, of Washington, D.C.; aunt, Delores Moore Harvey, of Washington, D.C.; devoted uncles, Van Pettus, of Radford, Va., and Charles E. Pettus, of Glasgow, Va.; in-laws, Victor and Lillie Mae Jones, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; brother-in-laws, Shawn and Steven Jones, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Lillie Jones, mother-in-law, Coach Hicks, Coach Nehlem, Clarence Carlos II and Nancy Johnson for their continued love and support during King's illness and the important part they played in his life.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2008, at First Missionary Baptist Church, New River, Va., with the Rev. Montie E. Brown Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 15, 2008, at the church.
Online condolences can be sent to the family at [email protected]. The Harvey family is in the care of Penn's Funeral Home, Pulaski, Va.

TO the Family:
What Cancer Cannot Do
Cancer is so limited
It cannot cripple LOVE
It cannot shatter HOPE
It cannot corrode FAITH
It cannot destroy PEACE
It cannot kill FRIENDSHIP
It cannot suppress MEMORIES
It cannot silence COURAGE
It cannot invade the SOUL
It cannot steal ETERNAL LIFE
It Cannot conquer the SPIRIT

My sincere condolences to the Harvey family. A little story I'd like to share regarding King; The event was a weight lifting contest in Blacksburg, VA. I was the lightest competetor so I went first. The lift was bench press, 1 1/2 times the competetors bodyweight for as many repetitions as each lifter could do. I did exactly zero lifts. There were a lot of laughs from most everyone there, except King. King came over to me, patted me on the back, and said "You did your best, don't let these people get you down." In the big picture of life, this act may seem small. But to me, that day, it was gigantic. RIP King (33)

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of the King, Mr. Junie Harvey. I was raised in Fairlawn and graduated with Marcindy and Jeff. King graduated with one of my brother's. My dad coached King in baseball and football through the Riverlawn rec club. I was lucky to know him and watch his amazing talents at a very young age. He was very gifted and was such a fun loving man who cared about people. PCHS has lost a great athlete, friend, and wonderful man. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Harvey family during this very difficult time. Although many people lose touch after high school there are some you never forget and always think about. May God be with you and may you be comforted in knowing King is with the almighty King in heaven. Godspeed Angie Parris

"Junie" is and has always been a sweet spirit and now he is in heaven with Jesus. God's blessing for you all as you have joy in the memories of "Junie".

To The Harvey Family;

I was so sorry to hear of King's passing. My family and I lived in New River and I have know King almost all my life. We rode the bus together from elementary school to high school. He was always kind and had a smile for everyone. He was a wonderful athlete and terrific person, but more importantly he was a child of God and he is with his Heavenly Father now and we have the promise of all being together again some day. Again, my deepest sympathy to your family at this time.

Thanks for all the great memories King! Always smiling, always joking, always being concerned for others. Cougarland has lost a great one, but heaven is a happier place today. When I get there, if I happen to get a chance to carry a clipboard and pick my team; #33 is my tailback.
We'll miss you Junie! See you sometime soon.

All, It was such a blessing to have known King. Memories created with King and the Cline family are treasured. Both my father and mother, Poochie (Bill) and Linda loved King and enjoyed his company. And in time as I grew up--he filled the role of big brother to me at school (high school and in college though I was at VT). King always had a watchful eye out for me--making sure that I was safe on our daily ride home on the practice bus from PCHS to Fairlawn. And he always reminded me that he'd make sure Ms. Cline and Poochie would be advised if I wasn't towing the mark.

King was a wonderful jokester!

After moving to PA he became good friends with my cousin, Kevin Caudell, and they played rec ball together. Kevin grew to know and love King and his family as the rest of us Clines.

My parents were fortunate to visit with King and his wife this past Memorial Day, and I only wish that I had been able to see him too.

Before reading the paper I couldn't think of a way in which he could adequately be memorialized. But, the obituary that submitted has eloquently captured the King "Junie" we knew and loved.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Harvey family. Although I did not know King personally, I followed his career at Pulaski and then at WVU. He was quite the athelete. I was fortunate enough to know his older brother Jeff quite well as we competed against each other in High school and also had the opportunity to work and know Shirley. Through them, it is easy to understand why King was so well thought of. My prayers again to all during this difficult time.
