Jack Henderson Obituary

Jack S. Henderson, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 17, 1929, to Eddie and Elizabeth Henderson, and was the youngest of four boys. He graduated from Jefferson High School where he met Mary Lou. They were married at First Presbyterian Church on November 21, 1956. Jack graduated from East Tennessee College, where he played football. He played fast pitch softball for the Roanoke Scrappers and the Phillips 66 Oilers for eight years, winning the State Championship in 1957 and 1958. He was the head football coach at Franklin County High School (1956 to 1963), and retired from Bank of America. He was an avid fan and supporter of his grandchildren's sporting events. Jack loved his family, many friends, his FCHS "Boys," and will be missed greatly. Jack is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; son and daughter-in-law, David and Carol; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Nancy; grandchildren, Matthew, Rebecca, James, Joshua, Johnathan, Michael and Jennifer; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Hazel Henderson; sister-in-law, Velma Henderson; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held noon on Friday, August 22, 2008, in the Lapsley Chapel of First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Robert Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2008, and again at First Presbyterian Church on Friday following services. Mary Lou and Family: Our deepest sympathy to you in your loss. Little did we know last Sunday when we saw your family celebrating Jack's birthday that he would be called to his heavenly home so soon. We do know that we are not guaranteed the next minute, but as believers we can be assured that "the next minute" will be a glorious time with our Lord. We will be thinking of you.
