James Otey Obituary

James Edward Otey, 71, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2008. He was preceded in death by three brothers; and a sister. Mr. Otey was a United States Army veteran. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Anne S. Otey; sons, Edward T. "Eddie" Otey and wife, Cammie, of Roanoke, Eric Ray Otey and wife, Sandra, of Rural Hall, N.C., and E'Drick A. Otey, of Salem; grandson, Quintin M. Otey, of Roanoke; sisters, Marcella Cassidy, of Stafford, Va., Mattie Otey, of Salem, Helen Gillette, of Clinton, Md., and Emmie Ruth "Cat" Otey, of Roanoke; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008, in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Harry Miller. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2008, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2008, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, 540-366-0707.

Ann, I am so sorry to hear that Ed passed away. Mr. Bailey came by and told me he was not doing well.

I am sitting here remembering all the great memories from years ago, we were really good neighbors and we shared years of laughter and raised our children together. We were so sad when you moved away, but we still saw you a lot in our travels. I can remember Ed's big laugh and that big smile how much he loved his family. He and Richard had so many good times talking about family, life and the times they were in the service. We did not see you all the time after you moved, but when they saw each other for years between Dr. visits at the VA they always talked.

Unfortunately no matter how long we have the joy and love of our family members we are never ready to let them go. I hope you and the family get comfort in knowing that he is hurting no more and in a peaceful place now still smiling.

We love you Ann and your family and wish you comfort, strength and peace. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
