Cedric Crews Obituary

Cedric C. Crews entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 26, 2008. He was born December 26, 1953, to the late Clifton H. Crews Jr. and Juanita Miller Crews. "Hurc" as he was affectionately called by his father loved his family dearly and his family loved him. Cedric will always be remembered for helping those that were in need, he was truly a servant.
He lived in Richmond, Va., for many years where he was employed with the Virginia Department of Transportation as a State Highway Inspector Senior. He retired from VDOT in 2002 with many years of service.

While in Richmond he became a member of Grayland Baptist Church where he was elected to the Deacon's Ministry as a Deacon elect. Cedric was also chosen Man of the Year while he was at Grayland and was involved in other ministries. He will also be remembered for his service while in Richmond to the Downtown Community Ministry where on his lunch breaks from VDOT he would volunteer to help serve lunch to low income families and the homeless.

After relocating back to Roanoke, Va., he rejoined the Morning Star Baptist Church where he was ordained as a Deacon on February 26, 2006. He was a member of the Deacon's Ministry, the SSS Prayer Ministry, the Dorcus Missionary Circle, Out Reach Ministry, Coordinator of the Singles Ministry, past member of the Male Chorus, the Trustee Ministry and honorary member of the Usher's Ministry. Cedric was selected Man of the Year at Morning Star in 1996. He was seen helping out in other ministries, especially the Kitchen Ministry while he was able. Cedric loved God and his church dearly. He would also volunteer at the Rescue Mission and help out when possible.

Brother Crews was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton H. Crews Jr. and Juanita Miller Crews; uncle, the Rev. Thomas (Leona) Crews; aunt, Vera (Carl) Nash Jr.; cousins, Gloria Dorma and Carl Nash III; and godmother, Mrs. Lillian Banks.

He leaves to rejoice in his memory and shout in his victory his sisters, Jacqueline Williams, Norma (Michael) Hooper, both of Roanoke, Va., and Tonya E. Crews, of New York, N.Y.; brother, Musa (Mark) (Theresa) AR-Rahman, of Roanoke, Va.; aunt, Levona Miller (Edward) Coles, of Detroit, Mich.; nephews, Corey L. Williams, of Norfolk, Va., Jackie (Erika) Glasper, Enoch Williams, Jermaine Glasper and Ivory (Felicia) Crews; nieces, Fatimah and Aquela Martin, all of Roanoke; most beloved cousins, Marcia (Cookie) Gunn and family, Charles Nash and family, Alvin Nash and family, Johnny Nash and family, Thomas Crews Jr. and family, Margaret Henderson and family, Ricky Crews and family, Pam Parker and family, Rosylyn Nichols and family, Edwin and Edward Coles and family, of Detroit, Mich., Martha Williams and family, Carl Law, Oliver Law, Daisy Johnson and family, Benita Williams and family, Ida Alby Crews and Crews families, of Advance, N.C., and Draper family, of Bassett, Va.; so many very special friends, David Hamilton, the Grayland Baptist Church family, of Richmond, Va., Randell Hicks and family, of Richmond, Va., James Sharper, of Houston, Texas, and Sis. Nettie Coad, of Greensboro, N.C., who was a caregiver to Cedric while in Greensboro; 15 great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-niece. God bless you all. Cedric loved each and every one of you.

To Pastor and Sister Lewis and the Morning Star Church family, words cannot express the love and affection that he had for you. Keep on keeping on in Jesus. To our dear sweet brother, words cannot express how much we loved you and we will never forget how much you loved us. Jackie, Norma, Mark and Tonya.

Funeral services will be held noon on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at Morning Star Baptist Church with Dr. L.A. Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. The entombment will be in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be held on Monday, September 1, 2008, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will resume at 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.
