Zelma Williamson Obituary

Zelma H. Williamson, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2008, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Williamson had been preceded in death by her husband, Luther L. Williamson; her parents, V.E. and Gusta Helms; her sister, Lurla Zane Dean; and her brothers, Carlenus, Ervin and Jack Helms. Zelma had a 42 year career, retiring after 25 years, with Carter Machinery. She was a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church where she had participated in the Gleaners and been a member of the Rebecca Sunday School class. She held memberships in the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 119 and the LaDeDa Red Hats. She had remained active and supportive of the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, the Scotish Rite and the Greyhound Retirees. Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth Sperry and husband, Rick; grandson, Nathan Sperry and stepgrandson, T.R. Sperry, all of Huntington, WV; stepdaughters, Anna Lea Boyle, of Richmond, Ky., and Cheryl Sue Fields, of Catlettsburg, Ky.; numerous other family and a host of special friends too numerous to list including special friends, Tim Stump and Brenda Canney. A funeral service will be held at noon on Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Darryl G. Crim officiating. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum of Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.

I heard of my Aunt Zelma's passing during the hurricane. I have to think she was watching over us as we came out safe and sound. I was lucky to have an aunt like her. She will be missed. Our love and sympathies go out to Libby and her family and we will keep you in our prayers. From all of us we love you.

Zelma was a very loving and giving aunt. I have fond memories of her but especially memories of she and my Uncle Luther from my childhood visits McAndrews, KY and to Roanoke. I extend my deepest sympathy to my cousin Libby and her family. May God comfort you in your time of grief and may your find peace in your happy memories.

Zelma was my sister-in-law but more like a sister. We remained close even after my husband, her brother Ervin Helms, died. She was such a loving, compansionate person and I loved her very much.
