John Smith Obituary

John (Hump) Smith Jr., 82, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2008. He was the husband of the late Arlene Gilbert Smith. Born August 6, 1926, in Bedford County, he was the son of the late John Smith Sr. and the late Emma Reed Douglas Smith. He is survived by three daughters, Nettie Smith, of Roanoke, Patricia Price and husband, John, of Roanoke, Delores Craft and husband, Donald, of Hurt, Va.; two sons, John Smith III and wife, Mary, of Long Island, Va., and Albert Smith, of Roanoke; twelve grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; The Good Shepherd Hospice, of Roanoke; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2008, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Marysville Road, Altavista, by the Reverend Johnnie Hunt. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors by VFW Post 4165 and DAV Chapter 46, of Altavista. The remains will lie in state at the church from 1 p.m. until the hour of service. The cortege will assemble at the residence of Delores and Donald Craft, 343 Compton Drive, Hurt, at 1:15 p.m. Viewing and visitation will be held today from 2 to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the chapel of the Cook & Minnis Funeral Home, of Altavista.
