Earl Johnson Obituary

"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known." (1 Corinthians 13: 12) Dr. Earl Robert Johnson Jr., of Roanoke, was ushered into Heaven on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, and now sees face to face the glory and majesty of his God and his Creator and beloved Savior, Jesus Christ. A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2008, at Church of the Holy Spirit, 6011 Merriman Road, S.W., Roanoke, Va., with a family visitation to follow the service.
Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on November 3, 1927, to the late Earl R. Johnson Sr. and Clara Gee Johnson, he grew up in Roanoke, Va., and graduated from Jefferson High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and then attended the University of Virginia, graduating in 1950 with a B.S. degree in pre-medicine. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1954, also from the University of Virginia, and was president of his medical school class. While there, he met and married his most beloved wife of 53 years, Nancy Taylor Johnson. After an internship at the University of Virginia, he completed his residency at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and returned to the University of Virginia for a fellowship in allergy. Returning to Roanoke, Earl maintained a solo internal medicine practice for over 40 years, and was loved and respected by his patients, hospital staff and fellow physicians. He was one of a rare breed of physicians who made house calls. Of utmost importance to Earl was his faith in and devotion to his Heavenly Father and his Lord Jesus Christ. Much of his spare time was spent in the study of God's holy Word and in sharing the gospel of salvation with others.
Left to cherish memories of his deep and abiding faith, unlimited lovingkindness, overwhelming generosity and infectious laugh are his wife, Nancy; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Rhonda Johnson, and Stephen and Elizabeth Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Alex Murray; and daughter-in-law, Genevieve Johnson. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Keith Johnson; and his sister, Marjorie Johnson Walter. His memory will also live within his 10 grandchildren, Gabriel and new wife, Joy Johnson, Ruth Johnson, Christopher, Taylor and Meredith Murray, Adam, Margaret, Ryan and Laura Johnson, and Andrew Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Earl's honor and memory to Good Samaritan Hospice, 3825-A Electric Road, Roanoke, Va. 24018

Dr. Johnson took wonderful care of three generations of my family. He was an outstanding example of what a doctor and a human being should be. He was a wonderful model of living the Christian life. My prayers are with his family at this time.

Dr. Johnson was truly a distinguished gentleman. His love for Nancy was so apparent to all of us at Printer's Ink Bookstore.
Love knows no bounds and goes on throughout eternity.

An exceptional medical Doctor with true dedication, knowledge and professional caring for his patients. A fine Christian example.
My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Johnson and family.
Dr. Johnson was the family doctor to my grandmother, both parents and I saw him at the office when I was visiting my family. He made house calls to us on Maiden Lane, SW, our family home.
His diligent care, I truly feel helped extended the lives of:
1. Mrs. C. E. Wines 1878-1961 my maternal grandmother: 2. Daniel R. R. Sink 1913-1979; and lastly my Mother, Dorothy Wines Sink, 1912-1996.
I will always be grateful to Dr. Johnson for his care and blessed to have had him care for my family.

A gentleman, a caring and compassionate doctor, and a person whose values were compeletly focused on the well-being of others, that is the Earl Johnson I was honored to work with at Carilion Roanoke Memorial. What a wonderful person. While I lost track of him after his retirement, my thoughts and good feelings about him and the way he cared for his patients- remain. My condolences to the family.
