Mildred Avery Obituary

Mildred Brooks (Mickey) Avery, 91, of Roanoke, died Thursday, September 11, 2008, in Winchester, Va. She was born June 26, 1917, in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Robert John and Pearl Stegar Brooks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Elizabeth Meredith, Virginia Claire Philpotts, Gladys Pearl Knowling, Florence Louise Hopkins, and four brothers, Clarence Stegar Brooks, Robert Humphrey Brooks, Milton Glenn Brooks and Edgar Lawrence (Larry) Brooks. She married Noland Vernon Avery on February 4, 1939, in Roanoke, Va. Mr. Avery died on April 9, 2007. Mrs. Avery worked as a cosmetologist prior to her marriage. Following her marriage she became a homemaker. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her daughter, Donna A. Carroll, of Winchester; sister, Emily Earnestine Helm, of Annandale; grandchildren, Jennifer L. Carroll and Kevin L. Carroll; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorials be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 Cork Street, Winchester, Va. 22601. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2008, in Sherwood Memorial Park by the Rev. Walter L. Wood. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, 540-366-0707.
